WELCOME
Welcome to Mrs. Rivera's Virtual Classroom. This is an extension of Evergreen Park School District 124 music classroom. I have been teaching music here in Evergreen Park since the year 2000. Music is a universal language and a unique expression of individual personality. It teaches self-discipline, self-esteem, and develops the mind and motor skills. The K-5 general music program is designed to provide every child the opportunity to experience music as a performer, creator, and appreciator.
THE MUSIC PROGRAM
General Music
All students in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade receive instruction in General Music (Music Enrichment). Students in fifth and sixth grade have the option of joining the Northeast School Chorus and/or the Evergreen Park District Beginning Band. The General Music curriculum includes:
- Singing
- Performing on classroom instruments (Orff-style keyboards, recorders, hand percussion, etc.)
- Improvising
- Reading and notating
- Composing and arranging
- Developing listening skills
- Evaluating music and performances
- Understanding relationships between music and other arts as well as disciplines outside the arts
- Music from other cultures
- Music throughout history
- Integration of music and other subject areas is done whenever possible
Recorders
All 3rd-5th grade students study the recorder for part of the school year, as a pre-band wind instrument. The recorder can be purchased through the district for a small fee. If a student has their own recorder, there is no need to purchase one through the school. The recorder book is provided through Northwest School at no cost to you.
School Musical
Every year students in grades K-3 are required to participate in the annual school musical as part of the Fine Arts curriculum. If your child is in grades K-3, a letter will go home with information as the day draws near. The K-3 Northwest musical will take place on Thursday, May 3, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.
Chorus
Chorus enrollment is open to students in grades 4th and 5th. Chorus is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the voice and the benefits of singing in a vocal ensemble. These benefits include vocal development, singing in harmony, self-expression, self-esteem, and the excitement of live performance. If students in grades 4th and 5th would like to be part of on stage performances and the school musical, they can join chorus at Northwest. Chorus is twice a week from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays in the Northwest music room library. Chorus will begin on Monday, February 8, 2016.
Band
Band enrollment is open to students in 5th through 8th grade. Students receive instruction, once a week, during the school day. Students receive additional instruction at times after school. For more information contact Mr. Dreyer at mdreyer@d124.org.
